Truth Has a Name

TRUTH HAS A NAME — JESUS.

Bible Reading of the Day: Read John 18:36-38.

Verse of the Day: “Jesus told him, ‘I am the way, the truth, and the life. No one can come to the Father except through me’” (John 14:6).

Rusty turned around and looked at his parents, who sat on the couch behind him. His mom had just paused the movie they were watching, using the remote control to the VCR.

“What’s wrong?” he asked. “What did you do that for?”

“Did you hear what that lawyer just said?” Mom asked.

Rusty looked puzzled. “Yeah,” he answered.

Dad leaned forward on the couch. “What did he say?”

The puzzled look on Rusty’s face deepened. “I don’t know. I don’t remember now.”

“He asked the jury, ‘What is truth?’” Mom said.

“Oh yeah,” Rusty said. “Now I remember.”

“He’s not the first to ask that question, you know,” Dad said.

Rusty said nothing, but his face wore an expression of curiosity.

“A long time ago, a Roman governor named Pontius Pilate asked the same question,” Dad said.

“You mean the guy in the Bible?” Rusty asked. Mom and Dad both nodded.

“You know what’s sad, though?” Mom asked. “At the very moment that he asked that question, the truth stood right in front of his eyes. When Pilate asked ‘What is truth?’ he was staring into the face of Jesus, who had already revealed himself as ‘the way, the truth, and the life.’”

Dad shrugged. “A lot of people make the same mistake today—like that lawyer in the movie. They say they’re looking for truth, but they look everywhere but the one place it can be found—in Jesus.”

“They don’t understand,” Mom said, “that truth has a name. It’s not just an idea or a concept, it’s a person. Jesus is the truth.”

“That’s why having Jesus in your life can help you understand the truth, because he is the truth!” Dad added.

Rusty nodded. “There’s just one thing I want to know,” he said. His parents nodded together, ready to answer his question. “Can we finish watching the movie?”

Mom and Dad looked at each other, smiled, and Mom pointed the remote control at the VCR.

TO DISCUSS: What does “the truth” mean to you? How can knowing Jesus as your Savior help you to understand the truth?

TO PRAY: “Lord, we acknowledge that you are the way, the truth, and the life.”
