If You Were the Only One

Bible Reading:  1 Corinthians 6:18-20

You do not belong to yourself, for God bought you with a high price. 1 Corinthians 6:19-20

Terese shrugged whenever she heard anyone talk about how Jesus’ death for her proved his love. She felt lost in a crowd. “Sure, Jesus died for my sins,” she protested, “but he didn’t die for me alone. He died for the whole world. I’m just one among bazillions of people who received God’s gift of forgiveness.”

Talk about it: Do you ever feel like Jesus’ death for you doesn’t really tell you how much God loves you—because you were one person out of so many?

Yes, you were one believer among millions. But that doesn’t make you worth a nickel less to God! And here’s why: If you were the only person on the planet, Christ still would have died for you!

The Bible proves that point: When God made his promise to rescue human beings from sin, there were only two people on earth. Right after Adam and Eve sinned, God promised to crush Satan’s head. (God was talking about the victory Christ’s death on the cross would bring-see Genesis 3:15.) Now here’s where you come in. If you had been the one in the Garden of Eden—instead of Adam and Eve—you too would have disobeyed God. And you also would have received God’s great promise to save you. Guaranteed.

Terese knew the Cross was about sin and forgiveness. But she hadn’t ever thought about why God bothered to send Jesus to die for her-why God thought it was worth the mind-boggling price of his Son for Terese to be forgiven. It was all because she was lovable.

That’s huge news for all of us, because Terese isn’t the only valuable child of God. You too are worth the death of his Son. Do you doubt that? Then listen to the Bible. You can read in 1 Corinthians 6:19-20: “You do not belong to yourself, for God bought you with a high price.” Now try that verse on for size in a personal way. Say it aloud to yourself a few times and let it soak into your brain. “I am so valuable to God that he bought me at a high price.”

How does it feel to know that God loves you enough to have paid an enormous price for you—not because of anything you have done, but just because he finds you valuable? God says, “You are valuable.” What do you say about how much you are worth?

TALK: Explain it in your own words: How do you know that Christ’s death says you are highly valuable to him?

PRAY: God, we appreciate the value you give us. And we’re thankful for the proof of our value you provided by sending your Son to die for us.

ACT: You have a friend who needs to hear this good news. Pass it on!
