Commit to God’s Will – Today’s Family Devotion

Commit to God’s Will

ARE YOU COMMITTED TO DOING THE RIGHT THING?

Bible Reading of the Day: Read 2 Timothy 1:8-12.

Verse of the Day: “Trust in the Lord with all your heart; do not depend on your own understanding. Seek his will in all you do, and he will direct your paths” (Proverbs 3:5-6).

Crysti and her friend Mary had been playing together all afternoon in Crysti’s sandbox in the shade of her house.

“I’m thirsty,” Mary announced.

“I could go ask my mom for a drink of water,” Crysti suggested. “I don’t want water. I want something that tastes good.”

“She might let us have some lemonade.”

“Yeah,” Mary said, her eyes brightening. “Or some soda pop!”

Crysti stood and brushed the sand off her pants. “I’ll go ask.”

“Wait! Ask her for some cookies, too.”

Crysti scratched her head. “She probably won’t let us. It’s too close to dinnertime.”

“Tell her we need the cookies for a game we’re playing.”

Crysti shook her head. “That would be lying. I can’t lie to my mom.”

“Why not?”

“Because,” Crysti explained, “I don’t like to lie to my mom because it’s wrong, and because it would hurt her feelings, and because I don’t ever want to do that.”

“So you never tell a lie?” Mary asked, unbelieving.

“Well,” Crysti said, hesitating, “I try not to. And I especially try not to tell lies to my mom.”

“How are we supposed to get cookies, then?”

Crysti shrugged. “I don’t know.” She thought for a moment, and she suddenly heard her mother call her from the window above her head.

“Crysti,” Mom said, “would you and Mary please come to the kitchen?”

Crysti and Mary ran into the house together and met Crysti’s mom in the kitchen. Two cups of lemonade and two large chocolate cookies sat on napkins on the kitchen counter.

“You can each have one cookie,” Mom said, her eyes twinkling, “even though it’s close to dinnertime.” She kissed her daughter on the cheek. “I’m so glad my little girl is committed to telling the truth.” She smiled and left the kitchen. The two girls watched her leave.

“Whatever that means,” Crysti said.

TO DISCUSS: A commitment is Like a promise. Are you committed to seeking God’s will and doing the right thing? What kind of specific commitments (promises) have you made? (For example, to tell the truth, to stay away from drugs, and so on.)

TO PRAY: “Lord, we’re committed to following your path.”
