Through the Maze – Today’s Family Devotion

Through the Maze

GOD CAN SEE THE DIRECTION WE NEED TO GO IN MUCH BETTER THAN WE CAN.

Bible Reading of the Day: Read Psalm 25:4-9.

Verse of the Day: “Whether you turn to the right or to the left, your ears will hear a voice behind you, saying, ‘This is the way; walk in it’” (Isaiah 30:21, NIV).

Dawn and Kara were visiting a small amusement park with their mother. While Mom went to get ice cream, Kara entered a maze of intersecting paths and tunnels that wound through high walls and confusing intersections.

The maze was sunk into a pit, so Dawn could stand by a railing and watch Kara as she tried dead end after dead end. Finally, Dawn could stand it no more, and she waved to her sister from her vantage point above the pit.

“Kara! Kara! Look up here!” she cried.

Kara stopped in the middle of the maze and looked up beyond the walls. She finally recognized her sister waving at her from above.

Dawn cupped her hands around her mouth. “I’ll tell you where to go!” she shouted.

“No!” Kara shouted back. “I want to do it myself.”

“But you’re going the wrong way.”

“I don’t care,” Kara insisted. “Don’t tell me what to do.”

Soon, Mom joined her at the railing above the maze.

“She’s so stubborn,” Dawn complained.

“What do you mean?” Mom asked as she handed a melting ice-cream cone to Dawn, who began licking the dripping ice cream off the sides of the cone.

Dawn pointed to her sister’s confused meanderings through the maze. “She can’t see where she’s going. But I can see everything from up here.”

“Well, why don’t you tell her how to get through the maze?”

“I tried to,” Dawn said, “but she doesn’t want me to tell her where to go.”

“I think I know how you can convince her to take your direction,” Mom said.

“How?” Dawn asked.

Mom held up the other ice-cream cone. “Try telling her that her ice cream is melting.”

TO DISCUSS: What was Dawn able to see that Kara could not see? What is God able to see that we can’t see? What promise does today’s reading give to people who need direction?

TO PRAY: “Lord, you can see what we can’t see. Help us to trust the directions you give us.”
